20081020 MCI Biweekly Update
Published Oct.20 2008, 12:00AM (GMT+8)

Between October 06, 2008 to October 17, 2008, the MCI index slumped from 5492.2 to 4963.4, down by 528.8 points. Despite the strong seasonality effect, it appears that the uncertain future outlook of the TFT LCD industry was the dominant factor, thus sending the MCI index slipping below the 5000 level. The last time the index was below 5000 was five years ago, roughly two months later when the index was first introduced by WitsView (viewers can look at the small MCI graph at WitsView’s home page to see the MCI changes right from the beginning until now). Needless to say, the market confidence is at an all-time low. As the effect from the traditional slow fourth quarter become more and more evident, the MCI index is expected to remain low for the time being. Further insight towards the future outlook will be obtained when the major panel makers hold their investor conferences during the next week or so.
